Macomb County Department of Roads Asks Residents to Shake Mailboxes Ahead of Snow Season

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. - The Macomb County Department of Roads (MCDR) is preparing for snow ahead of the unavoidable winter season with Shake Your Mailbox Day on Saturday, October 19.

The roads are not the only thing that take a beating during the winter months. MCDR is reminding residents to check the location, stability and durability of their mailboxes by shaking them on Shake Your Mailbox Day. To prevent damage from snow thrown by passing plow trucks, residents are encouraged to prepare mailboxes for winter by tightening screws and ensuring the post and mailbox are secure enough to withstand large amounts of thrown snow.

"Mailbox damage caused by snow being pushed to the side of the road is the homeowner's responsibility to repair. Taking a few minutes to ensure your mailbox is properly secured will save you time and hassle later on," said Eric Dimoff, MCDR Coordinator of Communication and Public Relations. "If the mailbox moves when shaken, it may not survive standard snow removal operations and should be repaired or replaced before winter."

Established in 2009, Shake Your Mailbox Day is an opportunity for residents across the state to take proactive steps toward ensuring their mailbox is safely and properly maintained prior to the start of winter maintenance operations on Michigan roads.

MCDR is dedicated to providing the public with a quality county road system, with a focus on safety and convenience for motorists and the community, environmental responsibility, and financial accountability.
